Kate
Steinbeck is internationally recognized for her engaging
and diverse performances, innate musicality and beauty of
tone. Primarily embracing chamber music and solo artistry,
she has distinguished herself as a unique interpreter and
teacher of both time-honored repertoire, contemporary and
world music. 
Her recording, Light
in the Corner, in collaboration with percussionist Byron
Hedgepeth, was released on the Navya label in 2004. Proclaimed
“stunning [with] incredible ensemble skills” by
FLUTE TALK magazine, Light in the Corner has received
critical acclaim across the US and abroad. Her next CD, with
pianist Dewitt Tipton, is scheduled for release in 2007.
She is the founder and artistic director of
Keowee
Chamber Music, a professional ensemble established in
2001. Keowee, a non-profit organization, enlivens communities
in Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina
with eclectic chamber music offerings in historic and unusual
settings.
In recent years, Ms. Steinbeck has been presented
in recital at the US Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, in California,
Washington, DC, Ohio, and throughout the Southeast. In 1999,
she was invited to perform with the premiere percussion group,
NEXUS, at the National Association Flute Convention in Atlanta.
Previously a freelance flutist in the San Francisco
area, she premiered works for Composers’ Inc. and was
a featured performer on Old First Concerts, San Francisco
Performances, and Noontime Concerts, as well as live broadcasts
on KPFA Pacifica Radio’s Morning Concert. She performed
on World Explorer Cruise Lines.
Ms. Steinbeck has performed as a solo artist
and chamber musician throughout North America, Europe and
Asia. During a four year European residency, she presented
concerts sponsored by the Goethe Institute and Fulbright Commission.
She speaks German and French. Her goals include
communicating the intrinsic beauty of music to an international
audience, through which a cross-cultural sharing may foster
tolerance and peace.
Ms. Steinbeck has drawn immeasurable inspiration
from her teachers – Patti Adams, William Hebert and
Tim Day and coaches – Clifford Benson, Stephen Preston,
Gunther Schuller and Charles Russo. She earned BM and MM in
flute performance from Baldwin-Wallace College and the San
Francisco Conservatory, respectively. She was a Fulbright
scholar to Belgium and won a First Prize in chamber music
from the Belgian Royal Conservatory in Liège.
